Kindergarten Update 9/10-9/14

Hi Kindergarten Families!

It was great to meet with you all last Thursday at Back to School Night. If you were unable to make it, please read through the Back to School Night papers that were in a manila folder.  Also, please stop by and sign up for conferences if you haven't already.

New Theme: Apples! Throughout this theme, students will learn about graphing, measuring, sorting/patterning, colors, and the life cycle of an apple. We have sent out an apple to decorate, we put the date due as of Wednesday, Sept 12th. However, we didn't get it out on Friday so please do it when you have time.  We will be sharing the apples daily when they come in.  They will be displayed on our Apple Orchard tree.

Word of the Week: the, to

Students will practice writing an “I like my ______.” sentence with their own ending word. Whichever word they decide to write at the end of sentences will be sounded out to the best of their ability. It is normal at this stage of writing for students to write only 2 or 3 sounds in each word and that's all that we want them to write for now. For example if they want to write the word "school" and they only hear the sounds "scl”- that's great! We want them to feel successful in hearing and writing the main sounds of each word. Also, when they're writing at home, please remind them to use "bunny ear finger spaces" between words, a capital first letter and a period at the end of the sentence. Of course we are just at the very beginning stages of writing, but it is always good to keep these things in mind :)

We will be sending home directions to the online Lexia program next week, including your child’s username and password. Keep an eye out for it in your child’s take-home folder.

Thank you to everyone who signed up at Back to School Night to volunteer in our classroom!  We still need 1-2 parents for Mondays, 2 parents for Tuesdays, and 2 parents for Thursdays.  Please email me if you're able to help out as this is our academic hour where we rotate activities. Centers will begin the week of September 17th  from 8:00-9:05.  Please remember to go to our school’s office to get information about being fingerprinted and getting your TB test prior to this date.  If the school already has this information on file from previous years, then you’re all cleared to volunteer! If it is your day to come in, please arrive by 7:55, sign-in at the office and get a visitor sticker, then come to our classroom to organize homework folders and to see what Center activity you are leading that day. If you are ever unable to attend, it is very important that you find a replacement (send out a group email asking for a sub) or let us know in advance because the lessons that we plan rely heavily on adult leadership/supervision.  Thank you!

Thank you to the parents who ordered Scholastic books!  We earned $20 in free books for our class! YAY!  I'll send out another order form next month!

This Friday is Free Movie night at our school with free popcorn.  Please join us in celebrating and getting to know new families at our school.  You can bring picnic or snacks, chairs, blankets, etc.

Picture Day- Friday, September 21
Field trip- Wednesday, September 26. We still a few more drivers for this trip.  Please email me if you're able to drive.

Thanksgiving Week

Hi Kindergarten Families,  Since we only have school on Monday and Tuesday next week, we’ll spend time reviewing prior concepts and continuing to observe and study our caterpillars.   On Tuesday, we will have a small “friendship gathering"  in honor of Thanksgiving.  We will give the students a small snack and focus on manners, friendship and the meaning of being “thankful” and “giving”.  With Thanksgiving on my mind, I’d like to thank all of you who have volunteered/donated to our class in many different ways this year. Kindergarten Update 5/6

Dear Kindergarten Families, We had a busy week in Kindergarten!  We started practicing songs and poems for our promotion ceremony!  This class loves to perform and they are excited to have a promotion ceremony on May 28th at 8:15!  Please mark your calendar! Word Wall Words:  "saw", "make" In Writer's Workshop, the class completed their opinion writing about the cleanliness of our school.  The students stated their opinion, gave 2-3 reasons to support their opinion, and offered a solution to solve the problem.  This is one of my favorite writing pieces! The students will take their work home after Ms. Green reads them. In Reader's Workshop, students will learn how to scan the pages of a book to locate known words that can help them read words in a snap! December 3-7

Hello Families, Wow! It is already December!  Time flies!   The next few weeks will be filled with winter, holiday, and Mind Up activities!  As we head into the holidays,  I find that students are more energetic and need "calm" during this time of year.  We will spend time discussing how to be "mindful"  using our senses.  We will practice mindful breathing and meditation.  I hope the students will be able to take these practices and use them at home! This week, we will also be finishing up gingerbread stories and projects.  We will also make cards for the our Reading Buddies and for our families. In Writer's Workshop,  students are wrapping up their narrative stories.  They are editing and adding more details to their pictures and writing.  At home, please practice writing sentences using spaces and punctuation, as this tends to be a teaching point revisited often.  Also, have your child practice writing s
